MOUNT MITCHELL - NORTH CAROLINA

Scenery surrounding the mountain peak

The latitude and longitude coordinates (GPS waypoint) of the top of Mount Mitchell are 35.764857 (North), -82,26506 (West) and the approximate elevation is 6,684 feet (2,037  meters) above sea level. Mount Mitchell ranks 16th in height on the list of highest natural points in each U.S. state. It is the highest peak in the Appalachian Mountains, and is located near Burnsville in Yancey County, North Carolina. Mount Mitchell is about 19 miles northeast of Ashville.

Mount Mitchell was first measured by Elisha Mitchell, a science professor at the University of  North Carolina in 1835. Through a combination of barometric pressure readings and mathematical formulas, he was able to calculate the height of the summit-which would eventually bear his name-to within 12 feet of today's measurements. Elisha Mitchell would later return to the mountain to take more recordings and fell to his death while doing so-he lies entombed at the base of the observation tower.

The summit is often windy, with recorded gusts of up to 178 mph (286 km/h). The mountain recorded a new state record of 139.94 inches of precipitation in 2018.

The mountain observation tower is by a easy drive up to the center's parking lot from the Blue Ridge Parkway. From there a moderate couple hundred meter incline leads to the tower.
